Creating a World; Telling a Story

A man builds a snowman that begins to melt in the midday sun. He watches for a while before picking up the snowman and bringing him to the mountains, where he stops melting. The man waves goodbye and leaves.

In this first session we talk about the way worlds are build by telling stories. We discuss the way people have a tendency to actually look for stories whenever we encounter anything. In looking for a story we try to make sense of what we are encountering, of the world that surrounds us.

In the plenary part, we discuss several techniques that are employed to create world by telling a story. In particular we look at the following phenomena:

  • immersion
  • suspension of disbelief
  • (breaking) the fourth wall
  • principle of charity
  • transparant immediacity
  • hypermediality

Apart from these techniques, we also look at the role of interpunction, emotion, and interpunction.
